In the middle of the Pacific Ocean sits a mass of garbage that is 8.1% the size of the entire sea. It is known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP), and is estimated to contain over 100 million tons of waste. The debris gathers in that particular location as ocean currents convene in the Subtropical Convergence Region, and is causing grave harm to the immediate ecosystem and those within a broad surrounding swath.The Plastic Fish Tower, a circular structure floating on the ocean surface within the GPGP, will collect and reprocess plastic, which estimates say comprises 90% of the GPGP and is often ingested by birds and fish, causing their demise. A large fence will circle the structure underwater in a 1 km diameter to capture all the plastic that floats its way. The plastic will be recycled within the structure and processed into plastic patches that can be assembled into fish farms to restore the ecosystem. In addition to helping mitigate the pollution, the fish farm will also have two added benefits: the buoyancy of the plastic fish farm elements will be enough to keep the entire structure afloat since plastic is in fact so buoyant, and it will position the structure as a tourist attraction. Bringing tourists to the GPGP would greatly help in disseminating widely the reality of this manmade ecological catastrophe. The tourists will be transported to and from the site by ships that are fueled by chemicals that will be collected from the processed plastics within the skyscraper in an as-of-yet-undiscovered method of chemical extraction.The structure itself is a ring that rises above the water and also goes below, but is largely hollow. The outer ring holds residential and leisure spaces, and is connected at intervals by bridges that are enclosed underwater (and one that is open on the water’s surface). Fishing banks made from the recycled plastic funnel up through the middle of the ring, helping to keep the structure buoyant.

"Fit your lifes", "Show yours life". 사람들의 삶을 서로 보여주며 소통하자. 저희는 각자 삶의 일부를 공유하며 소통할 수 있는 장을 만들어 주고자 합니다. 정원은 삶의 단편적인 모습들이 드러나는 공간으로 거주자들의 삶의 연장선상의 공간이며 삶의 일부를 공유하여 소통할 수 있는 가능성의 공간입니다. 기존 단독주택에 면하는 가로의 소통 가능성을 수직 코어로 실현하고 일부 발코니를 수직코어에 면함으로서 세 개의 접점과 맞물리고 각각의 성격에 맞는 다양한 의미를 내포하는 공간이 됩니다. 집의 문화를 만든다는 의미의 포괄적인 Homemaker들은 이러한 공간을 효과적으로 사용함으로서 시각적 공유와 커뮤니티를 이끌어내어 도심 내 새로운 거주풍경을 제시해 낼 것입니다.

2009 Arquitectum Competition - Vertical Zoo

Symbolization of the Eco Future //
The Zoo represents Puerto Madero as n eco city. The Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve behind the center of Puerto Madero has the ast memories, the present context and the future ideal that the city dreams. The vertical zoo hould play a key role in harmonizing the history and the future of the city with the nature. The zoo hus will be new type of media – sending a visual message about green environment. The uilding will be recognized by both citizens and tourists as a part of Puerto Madero itself.
Spiral nature //
The zoo provides animals with vertical ecological environment. The animals will reside in spiral space instead of traditional cages. They will naturally share their field by their own habit and behavior pattern in the new places. This approach guarantees the animals more spacious and lively condition.
Green Façade //
The exterior of the zoo has the system, which a variety of plants can inhabit. The system not only supports environmental base but also develops a habitat for wild animals such as birds and lizards. The zoo hence becomes a part of the nature and the nature becomes a part of the building.

UIA International Competition 2006 : Celebration of Cities - 2

Industrialization of the city is occurred exactly at the same time when infrastructure is built. Those infrastructures destroy and change the existing city's organization.
But yet there are reasons of the construction in economical and political points of view. I defined it is a necessary evil. It's regarded as negative elements in city when infrastructure used by people for a long time is deserted because of losing efficiency. Moreover, these kinds of state are slums and make a community devide and unbalance.
Unused railroad site in Yonghyun-Dong, Incheon, is the good examples. There are not enough facilities for welfare and education of residents and movement paths of people and cars get tangled in Yonghyun-Dong. So the residents are in dangerous situation.
I realized there are many elements that can be origins of city's regeneration when I observed that site closely. Those are family gardens made by residents and voided space people gather around the unused railroad.
Here, I think I've got to develope the origins ecologically and culturally. I also defined the first keyword is that infrastructures as necessary evil have to be changed to facilities which make residents happy and can be loved by residents.
I applied the simple method which makes movable programs remodeled of deserted freight trains and rails and constructs the pedestrian path using of ecological landscape architecture near the abandoned railroad.
The way that the human beings don't need to get near the programs, but the programs approach the people of itself has advantages to suffice the residents' dissatisfaction and helps to solve the heavy traffic jam. Besides it is good idea for recycling to remodel of deserted freight trains.
The most important thing is finding advantages of the site and then maximizing it, not making something new.
It is the most reasonable way of city's regeneration that infrastructure solves its own problems of itself.
Pond under the railroad releases the hear in the summer and is used to water resident's own garden. The parts of rails and boxes are rotated, and it can be turned to practical use.

Title : Light of Tomorrow
Light strongly influences on human physiology, mood and behavior, so that it evidently impacts on our building environments.
Gloomy daylight makes people depressed, alcoholic, whereas shiny daylight makes people innocent and zeal; in contrast, strong summer light makes human mood irritating and patient-less. Accordingly, daylight has a significant element of forming architectural space form. From the ancient time, daylight has been a significant architectural design consideration. Thus, architectural space and form are certainly influenced by daylight.
Typically, daylight is controlled by the orientation and shape of building, louvers, thickness of wall, openings, and so on. Besides, the amount and intensity of sunlight and daylight in architecture relies on the weather condition, geographical altitude where a building is located.
Instead, in this project, I propose a concept for the theme of “light of tomorrow” where daylight affects on shaping building form and space with various architectural components. Each component morphs into the shape and form of building, controlling the daylight. Here building form and daylight components interactively work together. Three components to control the sunlight are vitally considered.
One is ‘louver skin’ where sunlight is controlled according to the sun altitude. Here louvers are arranged such a way that it upholds the spot of sunlight vertically during all the daytime. Besides, louvers make a visual connection between inside and outside.
Second component is the ‘wall thickness’. By varying the thickness of wall sunlight can be controlled desirably. Here the thickness of walls has been controlled by calculation to provide proper levels of sunlight to all parts of the space during daytime where again the sustainability of the territory of light has been considered intentionally.
‘Cosine Law’ for controlling the sunlight has been chosen as the third element to keep up the territory of direct sun during all the daytime. According to cosine law, the angle of sunlight for a particular place changes its intensity of heat energy which is used for cooling and heating. By using the cosine law, a light-hole has been designed where heating and cooling both systems are developed. By using these systems for a particular space inside the light-hole, one will experience different temperatures at a fixed location throughout the daytime.
A meditation centre has been proposed as a functional program for the structure. A site has been selected at high latitude where sunlight is mostly welcomed. Different therapies as well as meditation programs are to be provided for the center. Within the building, three major areas are designed and assigned with three different programs: therapy, spiritual activity and community. In therapy area, various therapies including sun therapy, yoga therapy and stone therapy will be performed. Spiritual activity area includes ablution, meditation and yoga. These two sections are selected according to the necessity of daylight and sunlight. According to the locations and space forms, different yoga programs may be chosen. In between the two programs, a community space is provided. This area is designed for short time visitors to spend their time for relaxation, free exercise and yoga. Although short time, visitors can enjoy homogeneous sunlight that enters to the place. Besides, the playful movement and rotation of shadows according to the time and sun altitude, make the space pleasant and lively in contrast to the depressed and gloomy environment.(International Velux Award 2006)

The kitchen of tomorrow is the machine of all activities in a house which will act according to dweller's desire. The living style is changing with the progression of web and digital age. The dead space forced to define as living, sleeping, lounge, etc are not to be workable to the contemporary generation. Coming generation wants a magic tool which will work for all things whatever he wants and same thing is also true for the space in architecture. By aiming to this concept we intended to design a kitchen which will not act as a dead space forced for only cooking, but to design a flexible enclosure feasible for various activities of a house. Today's kitchen occupies a vital space due to various kitchen equipments and thus area of the kitchen has to pay valuable spaces inside a house. Besides, the furniture for other activities inside a house also pays the same which makes the space dead and makes bore by the same and fixed arrangement. Peoples mind and perception in a house always want to see the variations and so the different arrangement of furniture; thus makes different feelings and emotions inside the same house. Our team has give a solution by making the flexible kitchen where mobile blocks are acted a key role for making the inside space flexible according to the dweller's desires. We developed block system which is the combination of various equipments not only for the cooking purpose but also for living, education and entertainment purpose. To fulfill the needs for coming web and digital generation it requires various cables or wires and at the same time for the supply various pipes are required. In this design prototype of kitchen for tomorrow we have taken grids of 90cmX90cm and on the basis of the units we designed the blocks. The pipes are run by following the grids in all surfaces. Here we provided four blocks to play the role for making the kitchen flexible. These boxes run by guiding the grids which are followed by pipes. In this system the mobility of boxes are such that it can run through the all surfaces of the kitchen even it can go outside of the room. Accordingly, all the boxes play various roles to make various spaces according to dweller's need. At the same time the flexible system and mobility of the blocks inside the enclosure maximize the space inside …whereas it has also flexibility to make a space wherever need inside. When the mobility of blocks make the space for various activities, like living room, bed room, kitchen and other activities it also keep the kitchen equipments away from the kids, thus away from the harm. Living in the city should enjoy the memory of the city.Memories of the old city is intensive each facade of buildings.These memories start from the outside of building and progress the inside.Through outside facade faces the inside by the reversion the inside turns another new outside.Through converted inside faces the outside new memory stamps the facade of existing building.
DESIGN : Making a Hotel!
Each room composes a body of rotation and divided facade combines with one of side.Each room is changed the space by the lodger, the purpose and the strength of the light. It makes new facade and various inside space.
Inside space has connection with urban space and accepts the multiplicity of events.

Distinguished faculty and students, my name is Chiba Manabu. I am deeply grateful to all of you for your presence here at Inha University in Korea. Tonight is very special for all of you because of the World Cup soccer game. Unfortunately, Japan lost in the morning.
I know that this is the 17th workshop held at Inha University Department of Architecture. As far as I know, we have only a limited amount of time towards completing the workshop, only two days. That must be a very tight schedule. Within such a short time frame, you are asked to develop a design while communicating with all of you. I think some of you just started learning architecture and some of you are already toward the last year of your study and in a graduate program.

TITLE: Sus-containability
(sustainable + container + ability)
Lack of access to adequate sports facilities or equipment is typical barriers particularly for people in a low-income community. Particular attention should be given to the more easily accessible and convenient local sports facilities to the low-income neighborhoods and slum areas.
Nevertheless, the lack of financial accountability in the areas may be a huge loophole to support the idea. Most of the poor community just cannot financially support expensive sports facilities. In this, the necessity for developing a new concept of sports facilities for the poor community is essential. Instead of a large state-of-the-art facility, facilities that are small in scale, self-sustaining and using recyclable material may be an appropriate solution for the poor community.
Our design proposal attempts to connect the new sports facilities in a low-income community with the existing infrastructure, that is, roads and buildings. The proposed site is located at Sibjeong-dong in the city of Incheon, Korea.
Around the site, a major street clearly separates a low income area from a high income area. Most of houses around the low-income area are packed like sardines. Unlike the high income area, the street in a low-income area serves as a ‘major’ activity spaces for the poors, since the poors cannot afford enough rooms to play in their house. Therefore, streets serve as multi-functions for the poors. However, streets are not a good system for sports activities. Accordingly, areas embedded and connected to the streets are needed for sports facilities as a new system for the poors in a chosen site for the design.
In this, we propose a system of ‘Poly,’ meaning ‘much or many’. In our design, ‘Poly’ doesn’t have specific forms, rules or limits in terms of its use. Various materials and shapes can be employed in different purposes and programs.

Biggest poly in the center : Futsal, Basketball, Small club room,
Shower booth, toilet and garden
Poly Orientation : All small ‘Polys’ are oriented to the biggest ‘Poly’ that is located at the center of the area. People in small ‘Poly’s can see the biggest one at all times. We call it a ‘Peep’. All the ‘Polys’ are planned easy access and visible from the road so that people can watch who is playing what sports. It will inspire other residents around the area to become part of the sports activities. Therefore, ‘Poly’ will become a new system of sports facilities on the site.(http://www.comarchitect.org/)
